The Real Internet

How to be connected to the real Internet

If you don’t have connectivity to the real Internet, do as follows:

  1. Contact your ISP and ask whether they support “IPv6” and could activate it on your line. If they don’t support it, ask when they will. You may take inspiration from the following exemplary e-mail:
    Dear Sir/Madame,
I would like to ask whether you support IPv6 and whether it is activated on our link we have from your company? According to the test https://www.skutecnyinternet.cz/en/, IPv6 is not functional. If you have already activated IPv6 for us, how should it be configured on our router? Via DHCPv6-PD? In case you do not support IPv6 yet, when will you?

    Thank you.
  2. Even if it is known that your ISP doesn’t support IPv6 (and therefore doesn’t offer connectivity to the real Internet at all), contact them with the same questions. You can also join forces with your neighbours and other customers of the same provider and try jointly demanding fully fledged connectivity. Many ISPs often argue that their customers do not demand connectivity to the real Internet. If you settle for an inferior service, you won’t get better.
  3. In case you manage your router yourself, check its settings and make sure that you have enabled and correctly configured IPv6. Usually, it is configured automatically via DHCPv6-PD, but it may be also done differently – your ISP will provide you with specific information on router settings.

Below, there are links to how-tos of individual router brands. Some brands (e.g., Dahua) and often older models (especially older than 10+ years) might not support IPv6. If you can’t find settings for IPv6 in your router configuration, check documentation for your router model to see whether it supports IPv6.

If you are met with disinterest, hostility or even arrogance, it is probably wise to consider looking for another ISP who does provide connectivity to the real Internet (for Czech Republic, a database exists).
